I’m afraid of a lot of things. I’m afraid of saying the wrong thing, afraid of offending people, and afraid of the unknown. But most of all, I’m afraid of failure.
Everyone on this earth has failed at something, so why would I be scared of it? I think it’s because it’s not comfortable, and I don’t like when things are not comfortable. Life is so much easier within my own version of comfort. Am I alone here?
We weren’t made to be stagnant, we were created to grow. And sometimes growth isn’t going to feel natural or comfortable. Sometimes, it’s easier to fear than it is to challenge ourselves. But as this new year is beginning, and a new chapter is approaching, I feel like this won’t be enough.
Something needs to change.
I can do all the research in the world, but if there isn’t a practical list of things to be worked on, it isn’t be effective. I’m obsessed with lists, so I decided to put one together that will help me conquer my fear. Here it is:
1. Forget about their opinions of you. If you are so caught up on how other people think of you, it will be impossible to focus on your own growth. Most of the time, we read way too much into a completely innocent comment/text/action and we cause ourselves useless heartache.
2. Remember that YOU can make a difference, no matter your past. You are the only you in this world, but you are not alone. If there is something in your past that is eating at you, tackle it head-on, and don’t stop until you win. The pain in your past is a part of you, and it matters, but it shouldn’t define you now.
3. Dream BIG. This is such a well-known phrase that I think we forget the significance of it. So often, we are so stuck in our daily tasks that we forget that we have a whole life ahead of us, full of opportunities to pursue new dreams. I think as Americans, we consider the time between high school and college graduation our “one shot” at success. And if we don’t get it, oh well. No more chances. But in reality, each day is a new chance. A new opportunity to dream up new goals and take the first step in the pursuit of it. So what are you waiting for? Dream BIG!
4. Keep going. Even when it seems impossible, and you’re discouraged. There’s a quote out there that says, “Giving up on your goal because of one setback is like slashing your other three tires because you got one flat.” Don’t give up. Fear isn’t your boss anymore! Don’t forget that.
For me, that’s what this year is going to be about. Taking intentional steps to grow myself. I’m going to step out of my comfort zone, into the scary possibility that I might fail. I’m going to love big, and give grace.
Fear is discouraging. Fear is what keeps us stuck in our own little world of comfortable. So this year, I choose to be fearless and reach for the stars. Because that’s when we begin to grow, and realize that life is about so much more than ourselves.
